Yoga in the heart of the desert
Practising at sunrise, with the light climbing the dunes, and ending the day in the silence of the Sahara.
Somewhere you genuinely cannot hear anything
Desert yoga is advertised a lot and delivered rarely. Most camps in Merzouga sit side by side along the same stretch of dunes: you hear the neighbours’ music, the groups arriving late and the generators.
Tassili Luxury Desert Camp is at Erg Znaigui, 20 minutes from the centre of Merzouga, outside that stretch. There are ten tents and nothing else around. That is the difference that matters when what you want is quiet to practise in.
There is no studio, no wooden floor and no mirrors. There is sand, and in the early morning a temperature you will be grateful for.
At sunrise and at sunset
The two good hours of a desert day are the first and the last. At sunrise the light climbs the dunes and changes every few minutes; it is when people get up early without anyone asking them to.
At sunset, once the heat has gone, the Sahara sky works through every shade of orange before it goes out. That is when most people prefer to practise, and afterwards there is dinner and music by the fire.
We set the space up wherever you want it: on the sand beside your tent, on top of a nearby dune, or inside the restaurant tent if you would rather be under cover.
Retreats and groups
The camp works well as the base for a retreat, and we have hosted them before:
- Small groupsThere are ten tents, so the whole camp can be booked for your group.
- Teachers with their own groupWe provide the place and the logistics; you run your programme with nobody around.
- Couples and solo travellersTo practise with nobody in front of you, which in a fifty-tent camp is impossible.
- Accommodation and mealsA tent with a private bathroom, dinner and breakfast included in the stay.
- Vegetarian and vegan foodNo problem, and not as a side dish: tell us how many of you when you book.
- Camels and music, if you wantThe sunset ride and the Berber evening are there, but nobody has to do anything.
Questions about desert yoga
Are yoga classes included in the stay?
No. The camp provides the setting, the accommodation and the meals; the practice is led by you or by the teacher you come with. If you are looking for a retreat with a teacher included, tell us and we will be straight with you about whether we can help.
Can the whole camp be booked for a retreat?
Yes. There are ten tents, so a group of up to about thirty people can have the camp to themselves. Message us with dates and numbers and we will confirm availability.
When is the best time for a desert retreat?
Spring and autumn. From March to May and September to November the temperatures let you practise outside at any hour. In winter the mornings are cold but clear, and we close in July because the heat makes it impossible to enjoy.
Is there vegetarian or vegan food?
Yes, and not as an improvised side dish: Moroccan cooking has plenty of long-standing vegetable dishes. Tell us how many people and what kind of diet when you book.
Do we need to bring mats?
It is safest to, since everyone has their own and their own size. Tell us how many you are when you book and we will see what we can have ready.
