Sunset camel ride through the Merzouga dunes
The reason most people come to the desert in the first place. It is included in your stay, at no extra cost.
What the ride is like
We leave the camp as the sun starts to drop, in a line, with a Berber guide leading the camels on foot. The pace is slow: this is not a race, it is the way the desert has always been crossed.
We climb to a high dune and stop there for the sunset. That is when the sand shifts colour, from gold to orange and then to red. We ride back to camp after dark, under the first stars.
Worth knowing
- It is included in the tent rate. There is nothing extra to pay.
- Departure time shifts with the season: earlier in winter, later in summer.
- If riding is not for you, we drive you to the dunes by 4x4 and you see the sunset all the same.
- Children ride accompanied by an adult.
- Bring a scarf for your head, sunglasses and a warm layer for the way back.
Questions about the camel ride
How long does the camel ride last?
About an hour out to the spot where you watch the sun go down, and the same coming back in the dark. It is not a long trek: it is meant to be enjoyed, not endured.
Is it included in the tent price?
Yes. The sunset camel ride is part of your stay, whichever tent you book. There is nothing extra to pay.
Is riding a camel uncomfortable?
The first few minutes are a surprise, especially when the animal stands up and sits down. After that the pace is slow and steady. Wear long trousers: the rub of the saddle is more noticeable than the movement itself.
Can children ride?
Yes, and it tends to be what they remember most. Younger children ride with an adult. Tell us their ages when you book so we can prepare the right animals.
What if I do not want to ride?
That is fine. We drive you to the same spot by 4x4 and you see the sunset just the same. Nobody has to get on anything they do not want to.
Can it be done at sunrise instead?
Yes. The ride included in your stay is the sunset one, but if you would rather go at sunrise, tell us the night before and we will arrange it.
