Agafay or Merzouga: which desert should you choose?
One is an hour from Marrakech and made of stone; the other has 150-metre dunes and needs three days. We will tell you which suits your trip, even when it is not ours.
The short answer
If you have one or two days and you are based in Marrakech, go to Agafay: it is a lovely night in a stone desert with the Atlas Mountains behind it. If you want real sand dunes, the ones in the photographs, come to Merzouga, but only if you can give it three days or fly to Errachidia.
It is not about which one is better. It is about what you expect and how much time you have. The expensive mistake is choosing blind: going to Agafay expecting the Sahara, or rushing to Merzouga and spending the whole trip on the road.
Is Agafay a real desert?
Yes, but a stone one. Agafay is a reg: bare hills of earth and rock with very little vegetation, about 35 kilometres south of Marrakech. There is no sea of dunes. If you picture sand to the horizon, that is not Agafay.
Merzouga sits on the edge of Erg Chebbi, an erg: a sea of sand about 28 kilometres from north to south, with dunes rising up to 150 metres. That is what most people mean when they say «the Sahara».
None of this makes Agafay a scam. It has its own appeal: views of the High Atlas, snow-capped in winter, the Lalla Takerkoust lake close by and beautiful sunsets. The disappointment comes when it is sold with dune photos or as «the Sahara an hour from Marrakech», which it is not.

Agafay luxury camps vs a Merzouga camp: what you actually pay
Comparing the nightly rate alone is misleading, because each place includes different things. At the Agafay luxury camps that publish their rates, a double tent on half board costs around €215-265 a night (October 2026). Drinks are extra, a camel ride is about €27 per camel, and the transfer from Marrakech is about €50 per car each way. A night for two with a camel ride and a return transfer easily reaches €390.
At our camp in Merzouga, a double tent is €200 a night for two, and that includes dinner, breakfast, a sunset camel ride, Berber music, sandboarding and the 4x4 transfer. What Agafay saves you is not money on the night but time: getting here takes two days on the road or a domestic flight. The full breakdown is in how much it costs to sleep in the desert.
Cheaper Agafay nights are sold as excursions from Marrakech, from about €72 per person with transfer, dinner, breakfast and a show, camel extra.
When Agafay is the better choice (even though we are in Merzouga)
If you only have a weekend in Marrakech, or the desert is one evening in a short trip, choose Agafay. Leave after lunch, watch the sunset with the Atlas behind you, have dinner outside and be back in the medina by mid-morning.
Also if you are travelling with very young children, older relatives or anyone who gets carsick: one hour is easy, ten hours is not.
We say this against our own interest. We would rather you did not come than came in a rush, arrived after dark, left at dawn and went home feeling you had seen nothing.
When Merzouga is worth the drive
When the desert is the reason for the trip. Climbing a sand dune at sunrise, watching it change colour and sleeping with sand all the way to the horizon: only an erg gives you that, and Erg Chebbi is the most accessible one in Morocco.
When you have a week or more. With three or four days, the road from Marrakech crosses the Atlas over the Tichka pass and goes through Ouarzazate, the Dades Valley and the Todra Gorge, and the journey becomes part of the trip. It is all in getting here from Marrakech.
And when you are short on time but the dunes are non-negotiable: there are domestic flights to Errachidia, about two hours from the dunes. See getting here from Errachidia. For a honeymoon or a special occasion, the celebrations we prepare in the desert are worth a look too.
Which one for the number of days you have
The answer depends less on taste than on your days and who you travel with:
- A day or one night from MarrakechAgafay. You would not even reach Merzouga.
- Two daysAgafay, or Merzouga only if you fly to Errachidia. By road you would spend both days in the car.
- Three daysMerzouga becomes possible: the drive split into two legs and one night in the dunes. Tight, but it works.
- Four days or moreMerzouga, without a doubt. Enough for two nights in the desert, or to come in through Fes and leave through Marrakech without driving the same road twice.
- With young childrenAgafay if the trip is short. Merzouga if you can fly to Errachidia or split the drive: the dunes and the camels are what they remember.
- For photographyOnly Merzouga has dunes at sunrise. The snowy Atlas at sunset, on the other hand, belongs to Agafay.
Can you do both?
Yes, and it makes sense if your trip starts and ends in Marrakech and you have a week or more: one night in Agafay on the first or last day, when there is no time for anything else, and two nights in Merzouga in the middle. They are different experiences, not the same one twice.
What we would not do is go to Agafay thinking you have now seen the Sahara, or squeeze Merzouga into a weekend. If Zagora is also on your list, read Merzouga or Zagora, and if you are unsure how many nights to book, how many days to spend in the desert.
Is Agafay worth it? What travellers say
On Reddit and TripAdvisor, opinions on Agafay split in two. People who go knowing it is a stone desert usually come back happy: they talk about the sunset, the quiet and dinner under the sky. People who go expecting dunes talk about a tourist trap and «badlands» full of quad bikes.
Two other complaints come up: the noise of quads and 4x4s in some areas, and mud when it rains. Neither is a deal-breaker if you know beforehand.
About Merzouga, the most common complaint is different: camps packed side by side along the same strip of dunes, with the neighbours’ music and lights. That is why where you sleep matters so much once you are here.
Not all of Merzouga is the same
Choosing Merzouga is half the decision. Most camps sit on the same strip of Erg Chebbi, near the village, one next to the other. Others are set apart. Tassili is in Erg Znaigui, in the Taouz area, about 20 minutes from the centre of Merzouga: ten tents and nothing around them.
Every tent has its own bathroom, a hot shower and air conditioning and heating from 20:00 to 08:00. See our tents, or compare the options in where to stay in the Merzouga desert.
Agafay vs Merzouga: questions people ask
Is Agafay desert part of the Sahara?
No. It lies north of the Atlas Mountains, about 35 km from Marrakech, and is not part of the Sahara. Merzouga is on the Sahara’s northern edge, on the other side of the mountains.
Does Agafay have sand dunes?
No. It is stone and bare hills, with the Atlas behind. Morocco’s big dunes are in Merzouga (Erg Chebbi) and near M’Hamid (Erg Chigaga).
Is Agafay worth it?
Yes, for what it is: an easy night out of Marrakech with great sunsets and Atlas views. Not if you want dunes. Go knowing it is a stone desert and you will enjoy it.
Can you visit Merzouga as a day trip from Marrakech?
No. It is more than twenty hours of driving there and back. «Desert day trips» from Marrakech go to Agafay.
Which has better luxury camps?
Both have comfortable camps with private bathrooms. The difference is the setting: in Agafay you look at stony hills and the Atlas, in Merzouga you sleep among sand dunes. Check what is included, because extras such as the camel ride and transfers often are not.
Is the desert cold at night?
Yes, in both, and quite cold from November to February: the desert loses its heat as soon as the sun goes down. Ask whether the tent is heated. Ours are, from 20:00 to 08:00.
Where are the stars better?
In Merzouga, because it is far from any large city, while Agafay is about 35 km from Marrakech. Within Merzouga, a camp away from the busiest strip is darker still.
Which is better with children?
Agafay if they are very young and the trip is short. Merzouga if you have the days or can fly to Errachidia. We have a family tent for five.
