Merzouga without a tour: driving yourself to the Sahara dunes
Yes, you can, and plenty of people do. The road is tarmac all the way to Merzouga; for the sand, we provide the 4x4, included. Here is what nobody explains from out here.
Can you visit Merzouga without a tour?
Yes. You do not need an excursion or a group tour: rent a car, drive on paved roads to Merzouga and let the camp take you from there to your tent. Many blogs make it sound almost impossible; it is not.
What you do need to know is the usual self-drive stuff: how long it really takes, where to leave the car, what it costs and how to avoid people who offer to «guide» you on the way.
The self-drive route at a glance
| From | Distance | Real driving time | Via |
|---|---|---|---|
| Marrakech | About 560 km | 10-12 h with stops | Tichka pass, Ouarzazate, Dades, Todra |
| Fes | About 470 km | 8-10 h with stops | Ifrane, Midelt, Ziz Valley, Errachidia |
| Errachidia airport | About 120 km | About 2 h | Erfoud and Rissani |
| Ouarzazate | About 360 km | 7-8 h with stops | Dades, Todra, Tinejdad |
Times are real driving times with stops, to the centre of Merzouga. The camp is about 20 minutes further south, on the Taouz road.
Do you need a 4x4 to reach Merzouga?
To get there, no. The whole way from Marrakech or Fes is paved, and an ordinary car reaches Merzouga and the Taouz road without trouble.
For the sand, yes, and a rental car is not the tool for it: it gets stuck within metres, and rental contracts rarely cover off-road driving. That is why we drive the last stretch to your tent in our 4x4, both ways, included in the price.
Many camps charge that transfer separately, often €30-50 per person. Always ask before you book: it is the most common hidden cost of going independently.
Where to park at Merzouga (and is it safe?)
You do not drive to the dune camps: the car stays in Merzouga and the camp picks you up. When you book with us, we send you on WhatsApp the exact meeting point and where to leave the car, with a map pin.
Take into the tent what you need for the night and leave nothing valuable in sight in the car, as you would anywhere.

Driving in Morocco: licence, checkpoints and speed
UK drivers need a 1968 International Driving Permit as well as their UK licence: Morocco no longer accepts the 1949 permit (GOV.UK). If you hold another licence, check the current rules with your licensing authority or embassy before you travel, and ask your rental company what it requires.
Expect frequent Gendarmerie checkpoints, especially entering and leaving towns: slow down, greet and keep your papers handy. The usual limits are 60 km/h in towns and 100 km/h on main roads, and there are speed cameras.
And the advice everyone who has done the route repeats: do not drive at night. Lighting is poor and there are pedestrians, bikes and animals on the roadside.
Fuel, signal and maps
Fill up in Erfoud or Rissani before the last stretch: there are few stations after that. Carry cash in dirhams, because cards do not always work.
Download offline maps before you set off. Signal can drop on the mountain sections and near the dunes.
Arrive before sunset
The most common mistake on travel forums: underestimating the hours, arriving after dark and missing the best part of the day. The camel ride leaves to catch the sunset, and if you are late, you miss it.
From Marrakech, split the drive over two days, with a night in the Dades Valley or the Todra Gorge, and reach Merzouga in mid-afternoon. Step by step in getting here from Marrakech.
Touts and fake guides
Around Rissani and Erfoud it is common for someone on a motorbike or on foot to offer to «guide» you to Merzouga or to your camp. Sometimes the idea is to take you to a different place to stay, or to sell you an excursion.
You do not need to follow anyone: the road is signposted and your camp has sent you the location. If someone stops you claiming to be from us, call us before following them: we will be waiting at the point we agreed on WhatsApp.
What a self-drive trip to Merzouga costs

A 3-day self-drive itinerary
- Day 1 · Marrakech to the Dades ValleyOver the Tichka pass, via Aït Ben Haddou and Ouarzazate. Night in the Dades or the Todra.
- Day 2 · Dades to MerzougaThe Todra Gorge in the morning, fuel in Erfoud or Rissani, Merzouga by mid-afternoon. Leave the car, 4x4 to your tent, camel ride at sunset and dinner.
- Day 3 · Merzouga to Fes, or back to MarrakechSunrise on the dunes, breakfast and back to the car. Leaving through Fes saves you driving the same road twice; Marrakech is another long day.
Before you book
The difference between going independently and on a tour is control: your own timings and your own choice of camp. On a tour, the agency picks the camp, and it is often on the strip where most camps stand side by side.
We are in Erg Znaigui, in the Taouz area, away from that strip. See our tents, compare options in where to stay in the Merzouga desert and decide how many nights in how many days to spend in the desert.
Questions people ask
Can you drive to Merzouga in a normal car?
Yes. The road is paved all the way to Merzouga and along the Taouz road. What you cannot do is take an ordinary car onto the sand: that is what the camp’s 4x4 is for.
Is the 4x4 transfer to the camp extra?
Not with us: it is included, both ways. Many camps charge for it, so ask before you book.
Is there a camp parking lot at Merzouga?
You leave the car in Merzouga, at the point we give you when you book. We send the location on WhatsApp and meet you there.
Do I need an International Driving Permit for Morocco?
With a UK licence, yes: the 1968 permit. For other licences, check the current rules with your licensing authority before you travel.
Is it safe to drive to Merzouga?
The roads are in good condition and there is a strong police presence. The advice is not to drive at night and not to follow anyone who offers to guide you.
How many days do I need from Marrakech?
Three at least, with the drive split in two. Four is far more relaxed, and arriving through Fes and leaving through Marrakech avoids repeating the road.
What if I arrive after dark?
Message us on WhatsApp beforehand and we will adjust. Still, try to arrive in daylight: you avoid night driving and you do not miss the sunset.
Can I get there by public transport?
Yes, there are buses to Merzouga from Marrakech and Fes. Times and prices are on our getting here page.
