Sandboarding on the Merzouga dunes
The dunes are also there to have fun on. Boards are free for our guests throughout their stay.
No experience needed
Sandboarding is snowboarding on sand, without the cold. Your first run can be sitting down if you want to play it safe, and after two or three tries most people are going down standing up.
We leave the board at the camp and you can use it whenever you like. The tiring part is not the descent, it is walking back up the dune. Count on that.
Tips
- Best late in the afternoon or first thing in the morning: at midday the sand burns.
- Wear clothes you can shake out. You will end up covered in sand, and that is part of it.
- Protect your camera or phone: fine sand gets into everything.
- Children love it, and the dunes near the camp are gentle.
Questions about sandboarding
Is sandboarding included?
Yes. The boards belong to the camp and you use them at no cost during your stay. It is not charged separately.
Do I need to know how to snowboard?
No. Sand is far more forgiving than snow and much slower. Most people start sitting down and end up riding standing.
Is it dangerous?
Falls are onto sand and at low speed. The main nuisance is sand in your eyes, which sunglasses solve.
What is the best time of day?
Early morning or late afternoon. At midday the sand is too hot to climb the dune barefoot.
Can children do it?
Yes, and they are the ones who go back for more. You start on a small dune close to the camp.
