Luxury tents in the Merzouga desert

Ten private tents in our luxury tented camp in Morocco, from €100 to €425 a night depending on occupancy. All with their own bathroom, a hot shower and air conditioning and heating.

What a luxury tent actually is

A jaima is the canvas tent the nomad families of the Sahara have always lived in: a wooden frame, Berber cloth and rugs on the floor. The “luxury” part is what has been added since, and that is where every camp means something different.

For us it means three concrete things, and they are worth comparing when you look at other places. First, a private bathroom inside the tent itself, with a toilet and a hot shower: not shared, not in a separate block across the camp. Second, air conditioning and heating, because a January night in the desert drops below five degrees and a June afternoon goes past forty. And third, that there are ten tents and not fifty.

What it does not mean is a minibar, a television or room service. It is still the desert. The point is precisely that when you step out of the door, there is nothing.

Glamping in the Moroccan desert: is it the same thing?

Yes, it is the same idea under another name. Glamping comes from gluing together glamour and camping, and it describes exactly this: sleeping out in the open without giving up the bed, the bathroom or the hot water. What Morocco has always done in a jaima, other countries call glamping and do in domes or cabins.

The difference is that here it is not an imported trend. The jaima is the traditional home of the nomad families of this area, made from the same cloth and pitched the same way. What we have changed is the inside: a real bed, your own bathroom, air conditioning and heating.

If you were looking for glamping in the Moroccan desert, this is what you were going to find, with one advantage: we are at Erg Znaigui, near Erg Chebbi, where there are barely any camps. No lights from anywhere else, so you get the whole sky.

What you will find in your tent

Every tent is made from Berber fabric and furnished with rugs and crafts from the region. Inside you have the bed, a lounge area to read or escape the midday sun, and a private bathroom with a toilet and a hot shower.

There is also air conditioning and heating: cool nights in summer, and no shivering in winter when the desert temperature drops. That is not standard in a desert camp.

Outside, your own terrace facing the dunes. At night, the path between the tents is lit with Moroccan lanterns.

Tent types and prices

Six configurations, all with the same fit-out: the price changes with size, not with category. It is per tent per night, not per person, and includes half board, the camel ride and the 4x4 transfer. Open any of them to see the photos and what sets it apart.

Every extra night is charged at the same rate, with no supplements. There are only 10 tents, so high season fills up well in advance.

How to choose the right tent

The price goes by tent and not by person, so the maths changes a good deal with numbers. A double tent is €200 for two, which is €100 each. The family tent is €425 for five, or €85 per person: the more of you there are, the less each of you pays.

If you are travelling alone, the single tent is €100 with no supplement. It is more than you would pay in a shared camp, but the tent is entirely yours, with its own bathroom, and you do not end up sleeping beside strangers.

If you are a couple, the only decision is one large bed or two separate ones: same tent, same price, only the beds change. And if you are a family or a group, tell us how many you are and the ages, and we will tell you whether one big tent or two adjoining ones works out better.

What the price includes

No hidden extras. All of this is part of the tent rate:

  • Accommodation in a private tent.
  • Private bathroom with a hot shower.
  • Dinner and breakfast.
  • Sunset camel ride.
  • 4x4 transfer both ways to the camp: we come and get you.
  • Berber music in the evening.
  • Sandboarding.
  • Air conditioning and heating.
  • Wifi at the camp, for messages and email.

What a night in the tent is like

You arrive in the afternoon. We pick you up wherever you are and do the last stretch, which is over sand, by 4x4. When you get out there is mint tea, and we show you to your tent with the bed made and the towels laid out.

Before the sun drops the camels head out towards the dunes. You come back in the dark, and then dinner is served in the restaurant tent: soup, salads, tagine and tea. After that, the fire and Berber music, played by the team themselves.

Once the fire dies down the camp falls completely silent. That is when people realise where they are. And if you feel like climbing a dune to look at the stars, tell us and someone goes with you.

In the morning almost everyone gets up early to watch the sun come up from the top of a dune. By the time you are back, breakfast is laid out.

What to bring

In the desert there is a big gap between day and night. This is all you need:

  • Layers: hot during the day, noticeably cooler at night, especially from November to February.
  • Comfortable shoes for walking on sand. Flip-flops will not get you far up a dune.
  • A scarf or hat for your head, and sunglasses.
  • Sunscreen and a water bottle.
  • A charger and a power bank: there is electricity, but you will use your phone more than you think.

  • Finding the ideal campsite in Merzouga is a daunting task: the offer is immense and the comments contradictory. […] The first thing that sets it apart is its location: away from the crowded Erg Chebbi area, away from the large and impersonal camps. Everything here is more intimate, more authentic. […] The tents are comfortable, clean and well equipped. […] The value for money is the best we have seen, and we compare a lot.

  • We have just returned from spending 5 days in the Merzouga desert and are still trying to assimilate how amazing the experience has been. […] The tent was spotless, all super clean and cared for, something that is greatly appreciated in such an environment. And the food… just spectacular. Full breakfasts and amazing dinners. […] If anyone is doubting, really: this is the place.

  • The camp is exceptional: the delicious food, the cute tent and it had many amenities that made the stay enjoyable, from the bathroom to a very comfortable and warm bed that made us not go cold despite having gone in winter. It is noteworthy that the camp is quite far away from the rest of the camps, which makes one really enjoy the desert experience, like absolute silence. On top of all that, they prepared a surprise for our honeymoon. It was a magical experience.

Questions about the tents

Is the price per tent or per person?

Per tent, per night. A double is €200 for two people, not €200 each. That covers dinner, breakfast, the sunset camel ride, Berber music, sandboarding and the return 4x4 transfer.

Do all the tents have a private bathroom?

All ten, without exception. A toilet and a hot shower inside the tent itself. There are no shared bathrooms and no communal block across the camp.

Is there really air conditioning in the desert?

Yes, and heating, in every tent. It is what guests are most grateful for in January and in June, and it is not usual in a camp.

What is the difference between the double and the twin?

Only the beds: the double has one large bed, the twin has two separate ones. Same tent, same fit-out, same price. Say which when you book and you will find it made up that way.

Is there a single supplement?

No. The single tent is €100 a night and that is the final price. We will not put you in a shared tent either.

Can we book several tents together?

Yes. Tell us how many you are and how you want to split up and we will keep adjoining tents for you. There are only ten in the whole camp, so it is worth telling us early.

Is there a supplement for extra nights?

No. Every night is charged at the same rate, with no surcharge for staying longer.

Can the tent be closed?

Yes. And the team is at the camp all night, which is usually the next question after this one.
